Muang On Cave : One of the Landmark in Chiangmai

A larger and more illustrious cave system near Chiang Mai is the Chiang Dao Caves system. It is around 70 Klm north of Chiangmai. Rather, the Muang On Cave system is nearly as fascinating and is not as full of vacationers.
Muang On Cave is situated in the Sankamphang Area, approximately 30 km East of Chiang Mai near the hot Springs. The road leading to Muang on Cave winds it's way up the side of a hill to a small park. You'll find several seller selling food and mementos here and you can find a lot of shaded chairs available. If you don't have a water container, it is a good idea to get a cold drink here as it can be a hot clamber.
Go a few steps further and you’re at the foothill of of Naga-flanked stair that leads to a platform where a few stewards sell low-cost fees and rent flashlights (you don’t need one). You have the selection to go into the caves, or ascend a small and impossibly long stairway to the top of the mountain, where you should be treated to good-looking valley views, so long as it isn’t burning period. A lot of monkeys live in the surrounding trees; they’re exciting to see, but don’t feed them!
Leading up from this area is a erect stairway of 187 steps. At the top lies a big circular 'sala' with superb perspectives of the surrounding countryside. Just above this is the entry to the canister. As you walk into and trek around, you will encounter several hilly stairs going down along with several flat walkways in between. What’s particularly interesting is that you do not need to duck your head as you wander around as all of the cave within the structure are astonishingly high. Fluorescent lights have been artfully sited around to light the place while retaining the look and feel of natural rock formations.
The tunnel walls are slippery and rounded in the shape of the gyration pools of water that formed them. Here and there a small stalactite drip from the roof and an occasional petrified river of dazzling diamond like stain on the wall. The sheer path continues to the tunnel floor which is shiny by mysterious pools of smooth light from florescent tubes that provide lighting all along the way. just about halfway down to the cave floor is a weird group of two foothing images resting on a great natural ledge. Four of these are old men and one takes the uncommon form of a cow's head on a human body.
Where creative minds see a formation of an animal or an image of the buddha meditating, a shrine pops up underneath. Herds of small ceramic creature figurines hide in corners under stalactites bearing their appearance. Groups of dolls dancing sit in front of a lady’s figure looming in the darkness of bowing walls. Cobras line up under the serpent’s form. A huge stalagmite becomes a chedi. Statistics of Buddha loom in many corners. The vignettes under the rock forms recall the strong story of Thai animism; the figurines in pockets of the caves are the same as those in lots of spirit houses.
Tour to Muang On Cave : Journey out of Chiangmai across Nawarrat Bridge and go along Charernmuang Road. Go directly ahead when you reach the superhighway and continue on past the silverware, lacquerware, textiles and carving factories through Sankamphaeng - Bor sang umbrella village and take a right at the sign for Muang On Cave in Mae On district. The Thai villagers would gather their necessary stuff and food supplies before seeking refuge in the sheltering caves. In the present day, a travel to MuangOn Cave makes for a memorable day pilgrimage, especially when compound with a restorative visit to the nearby sizzling Springs.
